Present

Before we’d left the club, he didn’t really look at me. It was like everything that had transpired on that dance floor had disappeared and now the air was frosty between us. I had to pull Elise away from a pretty dark-skinned girl I’d found her with in a corner of the club and Nick had to take the drink out of his best friend's hand before we left. I tried to tell him we could talk later at the hostel, so that I could explain what happened, but he didn’t seem interested. He was almost vibrating with the kind of intensity I’d never seen from him. I had tried to grab his arm, but he yanked it out of my grip. A muffled, I’m fine, leaving his lips before he moved away.

The walk back to the hostel was quiet and awkward and I hated it. Elise opened the door for us, and we tried not to be super loud, but that didn’t seem to matter when drunk demons were scattered on the couches. I could see a few huddled over the counter in the kitchen, devouring a meal. Beetee was nowhere in sight and after tonight, I don’t think I wanted her to be a part of whatever was going to happen here. Elise raised her arms above her head and yawned, “he isn’t happy with you. I think he’s pouting.”

I narrowed my eyes, knowing exactly what she meant. The boys were behind us, and he was looking at me as if he wanted to say something, but he couldn’t even fathom speaking two words to me. I knew what happened in the club wasn’t something nice to see, but my reasoning was my own and I hadn’t given into Dimitri’s advances like he probably assumed I did.

“I’m not pouting.” His deep voice rang out as he pushed past Reese to close the distance between us.

“Are you sure about that?” Elise pushed.

“It looks like that’s exactly what you’re doing.” I added.

Nick turned his head to me and ran a hand through his hair. “It’s not pouting. This is just what it looks like when you aren’t told the whole story until it’s thrown in your face literally two feet away from you.”

“Ugh, I tried to fucking talk to you about it afterwards, but you were too busy ignoring me, so I really don’t know what you want from me!”

Reese stepped between us. “Um, okay. As much as I love seeing the two of you bicker, I am far too overwhelmed and overstimulated to try to referee,” he said sarcastically. I looked around and noticed we had a small audience discreetly trying to act like they weren’t paying attention to us.

“I personally think that you two should just go angry fuck somewhere so you can stop wasting everyone’s time. We’ll dissect Dimitri’s information tomorrow, so fix your shit or go the fuck to bed.” Elise rolled her eyes and made her way to the stairs, walking to the second floor.

I let out a sigh and flipped my hair over my shoulder.
